Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions:
It's time to harvest the peanuts. The farmer drives his tractor along the rows of peanut plants The tractor has three attachments. The digger goes under the plants and cuts the roots. Then the shaker scoops up the plants and shakes them vigorously. The dirt on the peanuts drops off rapidly. The invertor turns the plants upside down. The inverted plants lie in neat rows on the ground.
When the peanuts are dry, after about two days, the farmer uses a machine called the combine to gather the plants. Inside the combine, the peanuts are separated from the plants. The peanuts go through a chute into a huge container, while the plants fall back onto the ground.
When the container is full of peanuts, they are emptied into an even bigger container. This container pumps in warm air to dry the peanuts. Without this process, the moisture in peanuts would cause them to turn moldy. When the peanuts are sufficiently dry, the farmer takes them to the buyers.
At the buying station, the people check the peanuts to make sure their quality is acceptable. The peanuts are also sorted by size. They are then sold to factories, to be made into roasted peanuts, sweets, peanut butter and other products. |

Granny dislikes the room at first sight. It seems so dark and chilly. It smells musty, too – perhaps because nobody has lived in it for a long time. However, she cheers up immediately when she draws the curtains open.
Through the window, Granny can see red, gold ,and green leaves on a giant tree. The brilliant colours outside make the room look bright and pretty. Granny notices that the tree has thick branches and that its trunk is on the other side of the fence.
'So, the tree belongs to Grandpa's neighbour,' says Granny. To herself.
Granny sees a girl of about her age in neighbour's garden. She is wearing a cap and using a rake. Granny sees her concentrating on the task at hand. A while later, the girl pulls a handkerchief out of her pocket and wipes her forehead. She looks up and sees Granny.

There were four of them in the wagon – the man, his wife and their two sons. The wagon was being pulled by two oxen and a cow tethered behind it. They had been travelling for weeks.
When they looked around them, all that they could see was green grass. There were very few trees. The wagon wheels made tracks across the grassy fields. They cooked their meals outside the wagon. When they came to rivers, they took the opportunity to bathe and fill their water kegs. At night, they slept on quilts spread on the ground. The man would tell his children the names of the stars as they lay gazing at them, twinkling in the sky.
Finally, they arrived at their destination. The wagon stopped outside a house made of mud and straw. While the man and his children unloaded the wagon, the woman prepared dinner on the stove in the kitchen. They were all glad to be home. |

There are many different types of glass. Rice is a grass that thrives in water. Bamboo is also a grass. The hollow stems of bamboo are very strong. People in some countries use them as building materials. Sugar cane is tall, woody grass.
Grass can also be used to make all kinds of garments. In Hawaii, people wear skirts that are made of grass. Layers of long grass are simply tied to the waist and allowed to hang free. Many female dancers favour these soft and pretty skirts. Some people like to wear colorful straw hats. These hats, which offer ample shade from the sun, are made of plaited straw that has been dyed.
Farmers use dried grass to pack their fruit. The grasses prevent fruit such as cherries, strawberries and berries from being squashed. A heap of dries grass generates a lot of warmth. The warmth helps the fruit to continue ripening after it is picked.
Grasses have other wonderful uses, too. The ancient Egyptians dipped stiff reeds in ink and used them to write on papyrus. |
